Van Buren Oak

Van Buren Oak

Description

Profile by Lee Cook

From 1988 to 2012 we owned Van Buren Warehouses at 324, 320 and 318 W. Van Buren St. On the west side of the property was a large live oak tree. In 2012 the City of Tallahassee used eminent domain to purchase our property for a stormwater retention pond associated with Cascade Park, Phase 2. I have been concerned that the tree would become superfluous to the project and would be removed. As they complete the project, it looks like the tree is still there. Due to the construction I have not been able to measure the girth or get a GPS location. Van Buren Street has had a long history associated with prominent people who visited Florida A&M University. These include Chubby Checkers who wrote Peppermint Twist in a juke joint on W. Van Buren St. and Dr. Martin Luther King who stayed at the Williams Hotel at Canal Street.
